Brother’s sacrifice behind Vivrant becoming IPL millionaire
HE WAS once a promising batsman, but sacrificed his career to take over the family business after his father Himanshu Sharma died of kidney failure in 2015. Vikrant Sharma’s decision allowed his younger brother Vivrant to pursue his cricketing dream.
On Friday, that family decision paid off when Vivrant, the 23-year-old J&K leg-spinning all-rounder, was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 2.60 crore — 13-fold his base price — at the IPL mini-auction in Kochi.

India vs Bangladesh 2nd Test: India bowlers leave Bangladesh reeling on Day 3 in Dhaka
Indian bowlers made a confident start on the third morning, getting four wickets as Bangladesh huffed and puffed their way to 71 for 4 at lunch. The impressive Zakir Hasan (37 batting) fought well but Ravichandran Ashwin (1/26), Mohammed Siraj (1/21) and Jaydev Unadkat (1/11) were all in business while Axar Patel (1/2) was as dangerous as ever during the morning session. Bangladesh are currently 16 runs short of making India bat again in the second innings. Zakir and Litton have a lot of work to do. An exciting second session gets underway.
WWE Rumor Highlights
John Cena is planning on wrestling at WrestleMania 39, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, but his Hollywood commitments will limit the number of appearances he can make on television leading up to the show.
Commenting on F4WOnline’s The Board, Dave Meltzer claimed that WWE changed its Wellness Policy so that talent isn’t necessarily fired after failing a third drug test: “It’s because a couple of key people have had two suspensions and we’re in a wrestling war. Plus somebody with two could intentionally fail a third to get out of their contract.”
The Observer provided the following tidbit about William Regal’s AEW contract: “Regal did have an opt out on 2/24 but Tony Khan had an opt out on 12/22.” In other words, Regal could have opted out of the contract two months from now if he wanted to.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer mentioned that Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland “had chances to go back” to WWE, but “they didn’t even entertain it.”
The decision to postpone WWE’s planned show in India was made by their television partner in the country, says the WON. Sony Six wants to finalize its merger with another Indian TV network, Zee, before going forward with the show. The merger is expected to be complete by April.
WWE opted not to have a new episode of Raw for Dec. 26 so they could give production staff additional time off, per Fightful Select.
According to sources at the North Pole, Vince McMahon asked Santa Claus for the Christmas gift of being put back in charge of WWE. One elf close to the situation said Claus is “a big fan of flippy shit” and won’t agree to do it.
This awesome foursome brought home the most unlikely gold and changed our idea of a sport
Lovely Choubey: a former 100m sprinter and police constable from Jharkhand.
Pinki: an ex-cricketer and PE teacher from Delhi.
Rupa Rani Tirkey: a former kabaddi player and district sports officer from Jharkhand.
Nayanmoni Saikia: an ex-weightlifter and forest officer from Assam.
They took a relatively unknown sport to the national headlines, changed our idea of it and fired up the imaginations of sports fans across the country. For winning the gold medal in lawn bowls at the Commonwealth Games, they are ESPN India’s Team of the year for 2022.
India won a total of 61 medals at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Out of which 22 were gold. While each medal medal holds great significance, the most special one was won by the above team of four: a gold in the women’s fours category of the lawn bowls after defeating South Africa in a proper thriller. It was India’s first-ever CWG medal in lawn bowls.
LPL 2022: Final, JK vs CS Match
Jaffna Kings (JK) will clash against Colombo Stars (CS) in the final of the Lanka Premier League 2022 at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday (December 23). Jaffna Kings won the tournament’s last edition and finished this season’s group stages in the second position with six wins from eight matches. They beat group leaders Kandy Falcons by 24 runs on the D/L method in Qualifier 1 fixture to book their place in the final. Carlos Brathwaite, the current leading wicket-taker in the tournament, took two wickets to win the player of the match award against the Falcons.
Colombo Stars finished the group-stage round in the third position with just three wins from eight matches. But they managed to overcome a challenge from Galle Gladiators in the Eliminator clash with a seven-wicket win and then surprisingly beat the Falcons in the Qualifier 2 clash by six wickets. Charith Asalanka smashed 64 runs off 40 balls while chasing a big 169-run target with seven balls remaining to qualify for the final. Jaffna Kings have won four of their last five matches against Colombo Stars and are favorites to win this fixture as well.
Erling Haaland appeared delighted after he starred in Manchester City’s victory over Liverpool in Thursday’s Carabao Cup match.
The Norwegian had to wait over four weeks for the return of club football – and even featured in a Sky Sports advert before the resumption of the domestic campaign – but it didn’t take long to pick up where he left off. Haaland opened the scoring after just 10 minutes as City won 3-2 despite being pegged back twice by Liverpool, with Nathan Ake’s 58th-minute header the difference between the two sides. After the victory, Haaland took to Twitter to say: “We back, stronger than ever!”
Two of England’s greatest teams in recent years played out a classic at the Etihad, with City knocking out the holders at the last-16 stage. Haaland didn’t appear to show any rust at all with a textbook strike in the opening stages, which doesn’t bode well for opposition defences as Pep Guardiola’s side go in hunt of their third successive Premier League title, and their fifth in six years.
Harmanpreet to captain India in hockey World Cup
Defender Harmanpreet Singh was on Friday named the captain of the 18-member Indian squad which will compete at the FIH men’s Hockey World Cup, commencing on January 13 in Odisha.
Defender Amit Rohidas will serve as Harmanpreet’s deputy.
Harmanpreet had also captained the side in the recent series against Australia, where the side fought hard before losing the five-match rubber 1-4.
Midfielder Manpreet Singh had led the team at the Tokyo Olympics where India won a historic bronze medal but he will feature in the team as a player this time, as coach Graham Reid has handed the captain’s band to different players over a period of time.
The new chant Manchester United fans dedicated to Cristiano Ronaldo
Manchester United fans singed a new chant dedicated to Cristiano Ronaldo during their team’s 2-0 victory over Burnley in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday.
The Portuguese star terminated his contract with the Red Devils by mutual consent during the World Cup break.
Ronaldo hit out at coach Erik ten Hag as well as the club’s owners in a controversial interview with Piers Morgan that was released during the World Cup break and took many at the club by surprise.
Faisal Iqbal seals victory
Faisal Iqbal’s maiden international century and an incisive spell of fast bowling from Mohammad Sami guided Pakistan to a comfortable eight-wicket victory at Harare, as Zimbabwe slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat of the series.
There is just one match to come, on the same ground tomorrow, so a whitewash seems an inevitable prospect. And yet, despite wrapping up the win with more than 14 overs to spare, even Faisal’s innings was overshadowed by a rearguard of heroic proportions from Grant Flower, whose unbeaten 105 formed exactly half of Zimbabwe’s total of 210.
Draymond Green says Warriors ‘very fragile’ after road trip
Forward Draymond Green had a blunt assessment about what is holding the Golden State Warriors back following the team’s 1-5 road trip.
“Right now, I think we are very fragile,” Green said Friday after practice. “You start going through these things and then you start believing them. Once you start believing them, it becomes who you are. The only way to break them is by being mentally tough.”
The Warriors set off on the road trip following their best win of the season — a 16-point victory over the Boston Celtics. That game, Green said, was the team’s blueprint for how to be successful.
NRL locks in record salary cap for 2023
The men’s salary cap will rise to $12.1 million – up from $9.6 million – while the NRLW cap will increase to $884,000.
The arrangement is only in place for the 2023 season as the NRL and the Rugby League Players Association continue to thrash out a new collective bargaining agreement.
The NRL says it took the decision to release the salary cap figures on Friday to provide its clubs with certainty after the delays in reaching an agreement on a CBA.
Clubs had been in limbo since the contractual year began on November 1 because of the failure of the NRL and the RLPA to agree on salary cap figures, with many clubs reluctant to discuss contract extensions with players without a clear understanding of the cap’s value.
Jets’ Robert Saleh quiet on QB plan after more Zach Wilson struggles
The New York Jets are heading into their mini-bye — and likely beyond — with a major quarterback question.
Beleaguered Zach Wilson appears to have lost the confidence of coach Robert Saleh, who was noncommittal Friday on his Week 17 quarterback plans. Wilson could be benched again even if Mike White isn’t cleared to face the Seattle Seahawks on Jan. 1 because of his fractured ribs.
The Jets’ other options are Joe Flacco and practice-squad quarterback Chris Streveler, who sparked the offense, albeit briefly, in a relief role Thursday night during a 19-3 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Wilson played so poorly that he was booed throughout the game and spent the final 18 minutes on the bench, watching Streveler, a journeyman in his season debut, energize the team and the MetLife Stadium crowd.
The Jets (7-8) have dropped four straight and Saleh acknowledged that their playoff chances are “far-fetched,” but Wilson’s future remains a hot-button issue.
That’s all for now. Thank you for your attention.
